JEE PYQ: Electrochemistry Question 33

Question 33 - 2019 (09 Jan Shift 2)

If the standard electrode potential for a cell is 2 V at 300 K, the equilibrium constant (K) for the reaction $\text{Zn}(s) + \text{Cu}^{2+}(aq) \rightleftharpoons \text{Zn}^{2+}(aq) + \text{Cu}(s)$ at 300 K is approximately ($R = 8$ JK$^{-1}$ mol$^{-1}$, $F = 96000$ C mol$^{-1}$)

(1) $e^{-80}$

(2) $e^{-160}$

(3) $e^{320}$

(4) $e^{160}$

Show Answer

Answer: (4) $e^{160}$

Solution

$\ln K = \frac{nFE^0}{RT} = \frac{2 \times 96000 \times 2}{8 \times 300} = 160$. $K = e^{160}$.
