JEE PYQ: Haloalkanes And Haloarenes Question 2

Question 2 - 2021 (16 Mar Shift 1)

Ammonolysis of Alkyl halides followed by the treatment with NaOH solution can be used to prepare primary, secondary and tertiary amines. The purpose of NaOH in the reaction is:

(1) to remove basic impurities

(2) to activate $\text{NH}_3$ used in the reaction

(3) to remove acidic impurities

(4) to increase the reactivity of alkyl halide

Show Answer

Answer: (3)

Solution

$\text{R}-\text{X} + \text{NH}_3 \rightarrow [\text{R}-\text{NH}_3]^+\text{X}^-$. NaOH is used to remove acidic impurities (HX formed) from the reaction mixture. $[\text{R}-\text{NH}_3]^+\text{X}^- \xrightarrow{\text{NaOH}} \text{R}-\text{NH}_2 + \text{NaX} + \text{H}_2\text{O}$.
