JEE PYQ: Haloalkanes And Haloarenes Question 20

Question 20 - 2019 (10 Apr Shift 2)

The increasing order of nucleophilicity of the following nucleophiles is:

(1) $\text{CH}_3\text{CO}_2^-$

(2) $\text{H}_2\text{O}$

(3) $\text{CH}_3\text{SO}_3^-$

(4) $\overline{\text{O}}\text{H}$

(1) (a) < (d) < (c) < (b)

(2) (b) < (c) < (d) < (a)

(3) (d) < (a) < (c) < (b)

(4) (b) < (c) < (a) < (d)

Show Answer

Answer: (4)

Solution

(i) Negatively charge molecule is more nucleophilic than neutral molecule. (ii) Concentrated negatively charged molecule is more nucleophilic than delocalised negatively charge molecule. Order: $\text{H}_2\text{O} < \text{CH}_3\text{SO}_3^- < \text{CH}_3\text{CO}_2^- < \text{OH}^-$.
