The compounds A and B in the following reaction are, respectively:

Benzene + HCHO + HCl $\rightarrow$ A $\xrightarrow{\text{AgCN}}$ B

(1) A = Benzyl alcohol, B = Benzyl cyanide

(2) A = Benzyl chloride, B = Benzyl cyanide

(3) A = Benzyl alcohol, B = Benzyl isocyanide

(4) A = Benzyl chloride, B = Benzyl isocyanide

Show Answer

Answer: (4)

Solution

Benzene + HCHO + HCl $\rightarrow$ Benzyl chloride (A). AgCN is a covalent cyanide and gives isocyanide. So A $\xrightarrow{\text{AgCN}}$ Benzyl isocyanide (B).
