JEE PYQ: Haloalkanes And Haloarenes Question 5

Question 5 - 2020 (03 Sep Shift 2)

The decreasing order of reactivity of the following compounds towards nucleophilic substitution ($\text{S}_\text{N}2$) is:

(I) Benzyl chloride ($\text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{CH}_2\text{Cl}$) (II) Benzyl chloride with $o,p$-dinitro groups on ring (III) Benzyl chloride with $m$-dinitro groups on ring (IV) Benzyl chloride with $o$-nitro and $p$-nitro groups on ring

(1) (II) > (III) > (I) > (IV)

(2) (II) > (III) > (IV) > (I)

(3) (III) > (II) > (IV) > (I)

(4) (IV) > (II) > (III) > (I)

Show Answer

Answer: (2)

Solution

$\text{S}\text{N}2$ reactions depend upon $-\text{I}$ and $-\text{M}$ effect on substrate. On increasing $-\text{I}$ and $-\text{M}$ effect, rate of $\text{S}\text{N}2$ reaction will increase.
