JEE PYQ: Haloalkanes And Haloarenes Question 6

Question 6 - 2020 (04 Sep Shift 1)

The decreasing order of reactivity of the following organic molecules towards $\text{AgNO}_3$ solution is:

(A) Chlorocyclopropane (B) Chlorocyclopropane with OMe group (C) $\text{CH}_3\text{CHClCH}_3$ (D) $\text{CH}_3\text{CH}(\text{Cl})\text{CH}_2\text{NO}_2$

(1) (C) > (D) > (A) > (B)

(2) (A) > (B) > (D) > (C)

(3) (A) > (B) > (C) > (D)

(4) (B) > (A) > (C) > (D)

Show Answer

Answer: (4)

Solution

Given reaction is $\text{S}_\text{N}1$ reaction. Rate of reaction $\propto$ stability of $\text{C}^+$. Carbocation (B) stabilized by aromatic character and lone pair of $-\text{OMe}$ is most stable. Reactivity order: B > A > C > D.
