The major product in the following reaction is:

2,3-Dimethyl-3-iodobut-1-ene $\xrightarrow{t\text{-BuOH}/\text{Heat}}$

(1) Conjugated diene (1,3-butadiene derivative)

(2) 2,3-Dimethylbut-1,3-diene

(3) A different diene product

(4) $t$-Butyl ether product

Solution

E1 reaction with $t$-BuOH (weak base). Carbocation forms, then 1,2-H shift gives more stable carbocation. Loss of proton gives the more substituted alkene (Saytzeff product).
