JEE PYQ: Hydrocarbons Question 9
Question 9 - 2021 (25 Feb Shift 1)
Identify A in the given chemical reaction.
A substituted cyclohexane $\xrightarrow{\text{Mo}_2\text{O}_3,\ 773\text{ K},\ 10\text{-}20\text{ atm}}$ ‘A’ major product
(1) Biphenyl
(2) Cyclohexene
(3) Toluene (with $\text{CH}_3$)
(4) Methylcyclohexane (with $\text{CH}_3$)
Show Answer
Answer: (4)
Solution
Aromatization reaction or hydroforming reaction. The substituted cyclohexane undergoes dehydrogenation/aromatization at 773 K, 10-20 atm with $\text{Mo}_2\text{O}_3$ catalyst to give toluene.
