JEE PYQ: Hydrogen Question 6

Question 6 - 2021 (25 Feb Shift 1)

Which of the following equation depicts the oxidizing nature of $\text{H}_2\text{O}_2$?

(a) $\text{Cl}_2 + \text{H}_2\text{O}_2 \to 2\text{HCl} + \text{O}_2$ (b) $\text{KIO}_4 + \text{H}_2\text{O}_2 \to \text{KIO}_3 + \text{H}_2\text{O} + \text{O}_2$ (c) $2\text{I}^- + \text{H}_2\text{O}_2 + 2\text{H}^+ \to \text{I}_2 + 2\text{H}_2\text{O}$ (d) $\text{I}_2 + \text{H}_2\text{O}_2 + 2\text{OH}^- \to 2\text{I}^- + 2\text{H}_2\text{O} + \text{O}_2$

Show Answer

Answer: (c)

Solution

Oxygen reduces from -1 to -2, so reduction takes place. Hence $\text{H}_2\text{O}_2$ behaves as oxidising agent. In other options oxygen changes from (-1) to 0.
