JEE PYQ: Ionic Equilibrium Question 11
Question 11 - 2020 (03 Sep Shift 1)
Type: MCQ
An acidic buffer is obtained on mixing:
(1) 100 mL of 0.1 M $\text{CH}_3\text{COOH}$ and 100 mL of 0.1 M NaOH
(2) 100 mL of 0.1 M HCl and 200 mL of 0.1 M NaCl
(3) 100 mL of 0.1 M $\text{CH}_3\text{COOH}$ and 200 mL of 0.1 M NaOH
(4) 100 mL of 0.1 M HCl and 200 mL of 0.1 M $\text{CH}_3\text{COONa}$
(a) 100 mL of 0.1 M $\text{CH}_3\text{COOH}$ and 100 mL of 0.1 M NaOH
(b) 100 mL of 0.1 M HCl and 200 mL of 0.1 M NaCl
(c) 100 mL of 0.1 M $\text{CH}_3\text{COOH}$ and 200 mL of 0.1 M NaOH
(d) 100 mL of 0.1 M HCl and 200 mL of 0.1 M $\text{CH}_3\text{COONa}$
Show Answer
Answer: (c)
Solution
$\text{HCl} + \text{CH}_3\text{COONa} \rightarrow \text{CH}_3\text{COOH} + \text{NaCl}$
Millimoles at start: HCl = 10, $\text{CH}_3\text{COONa}$ = 20 After reaction: HCl = 0, $\text{CH}_3\text{COONa}$ = 10, $\text{CH}_3\text{COOH}$ = 10, NaCl = 10
Buffer solution contains $\text{CH}_3\text{COONa}$ (10 mmol) and $\text{CH}_3\text{COOH}$ (10 mmol) which is an acidic buffer.
