JEE PYQ: Ionic Equilibrium Question 18

Question 18 - 2020 (08 Jan Shift 2)

Type: MCQ

For the following Assertion and Reason, the correct option is:

Assertion: The pH of water increases with increase in temperature.

Reason: The dissociation of water into $\text{H}^+$ and $\text{OH}^-$ is an exothermic reaction.

(a) Both assertion and reason are true, and the reason is the correct explanation for the assertion.
(b) Both assertion and reason are false.
(c) Both assertion and reason are true, but the reason is not the correct explanation for the assertion.
(d) Assertion is not true, but reason is true.

Show Answer

Answer: (a)

Solution

Temperature plays a significant role on pH measurements. As the temperature rises, molecular vibrations increase which results in greater ability of water to ionise and form more hydrogen ions. As a result, the pH will drop. So assertion is incorrect. The dissociation of water molecules into ions is bond breaking and is therefore an endothermic process (energy must be absorbed to break the bonds). So reason is also incorrect.
