JEE PYQ: P Block Elements Question 27

Question 27 - 2020 (04 Sep Shift 1)

On heating, lead (II) nitrate gives a brown gas (A). The gas (A) on cooling changes to a colourless solid/liquid (B). (B) on heating with NO changes to a blue solid (C). The oxidation number of nitrogen in solid (C) is:

(1) +5

(2) +2

(3) +3

(4) +4

Show Answer

Answer: (3)

Solution

$\text{Pb(NO}_3\text{)}_2 \xrightarrow{\Delta} \text{PbO} + 2\text{NO}_2(g)$ (brown gas ‘A’). $2\text{NO}_2(g) \xrightarrow{\text{cooling}} \text{N}_2\text{O}_4$ (‘B’). $\text{N}_2\text{O}_4 + \text{NO} \to \text{N}_2\text{O}_3$ (‘C’, blue solid). Oxidation number of N in $\text{N}_2\text{O}_3 = +3$.
