JEE PYQ: P Block Elements Question 36

Question 36 - 2020 (07 Jan Shift 1)

Chlorine reacts with hot and concentrated NaOH and produces compounds ($X$) and ($Y$). Compound ($X$) gives white precipitate with silver nitrate solution. The average bond order between Cl and O atoms in ($Y$) is ___.

Show Answer

Answer: 1.67

Solution

$3\text{Cl}_2 + 6\text{NaOH} \xrightarrow{\text{Hot & conc.}} 5\text{NaCl} + \text{NaClO}_3 + 3\text{H}_2\text{O}$. (X) = NaCl, (Y) = $\text{NaClO}_3$. NaCl + $\text{AgNO}_3 \to \text{AgCl}$ (white ppt.) Average bond order between Cl and O atom in $\text{NaClO}_3 = \frac{5}{3} = 1.67$.
