Solution
When steam is passed over red hot coke, an equimolar mixture of CO and $\text{H}_2$ is obtained. $\text{H}_2\text{O}(g) + \text{C} \to \text{CO} + \text{H}_2$. The gaseous mixture thus obtained is called water gas or syn gas (synthesis gas).
