JEE PYQ: Qualitative Analysis Question 6

Question 6 - 2020 (08 Jan Shift 1)

The strength of an aqueous NaOH solution is most accurately determined by titrating: (Note: consider that an appropriate indicator is used)

(1). (Aq. NaOH in a pipette and aqueous oxalic acid in a burette)

(2). (Aq. NaOH in a burette and aqueous oxalic acid in a conical flask)

(3). (Aq. NaOH in a burette and concentrated H₂SO₄ in a conical flask)

(4). (Aq. NaOH in a volumetric flask and concentrated H₂SO₄ in a conical flask)

Show Answer

Answer: (2)

Solution

Oxalic acid is a primary standard solution whereas H₂SO₄ is a secondary standard solution. Accurate measurement requires a primary standard (oxalic acid) in the conical flask and NaOH in the burette.
