Question 16 - 2020 (04 Sep Shift 1)

On combustion of Li, Na and K in excess of air, the major oxides formed, respectively, are:

(a) $\text{Li}_2\text{O}_2$, $\text{Na}_2\text{O}_2$ and $\text{K}_2\text{O}_2$ (b) $\text{Li}_2\text{O}$, $\text{Na}_2\text{O}_2$ and $\text{KO}_2$ (c) $\text{Li}_2\text{O}$, $\text{Na}_2\text{O}$ and $\text{K}_2\text{O}_2$ (d) $\text{Li}_2\text{O}$, $\text{Na}_2\text{O}_2$ and $\text{K}_2\text{O}$

Show Answer

Answer: (b)

Solution

On heating in excess of air, Li forms oxide ($\text{Li}_2\text{O}$), Na forms peroxide ($\text{Na}_2\text{O}_2$), while K, Rb, Cs form superoxide ($\text{KO}_2$).
