JEE PYQ: S Block Elements Question 2

Question 2 - 2021 (16 Mar Shift 2)

Given below are two statements: One is labelled as Assertion A and the other labelled as reason R.

Statement I: Sodium hydride can be used as an oxidising agent.

Statement II: The lone pair of electrons on nitrogen in pyridine makes it basic.

Choose the CORRECT answer from the options given below:

(a) Both statement I and II are false (b) Statement I is true but statement II is false (c) Statement I is false but statement II is true (d) Both statement I and statement II are true

Show Answer

Answer: (c)

Solution

NaH (sodium hydride) is used as a reducing reagent, not an oxidising agent. In pyridine, due to the free electron pair on the N atom, it is basic in nature. Hence Statement I is false and II is true.
