JEE PYQ: S Block Elements Question 23

Question 23 - 2019 (08 Apr Shift 2)

The covalent alkaline earth metal halide ($\text{X} = \text{Cl, Br, I}$) is:

(a) $\text{MgX}_2$ (b) $\text{CaX}_2$ (c) $\text{BeX}_2$ (d) $\text{SrX}_2$

Show Answer

Answer: (c)

Solution

According to Fajan’s rule, greater the polarising power of cation, greater would be the covalent character. Since $\text{Be}^{2+}$ has maximum polarising power among the given cations, $\text{BeX}_2$ would be the most covalent alkaline earth metal halides.
