JEE PYQ: S Block Elements Question 33

Question 33 - 2019 (10 Jan Shift 2)

Sodium metal on dissolution in liquid ammonia gives a deep blue solution due to the formation of:

(a) sodium-ammonia complex (b) sodamide (c) sodium ion-ammonia complex (d) ammoniated electrons

Show Answer

Answer: (d)

Solution

Sodium metal on dissolution in liquid ammonia gives a deep blue solution due to the ammoniated electrons: $\text{Na} \rightarrow \text{Na}^+ + e^-$. The electron gets solvated by ammonia to form ammoniated electrons which give the blue colour.
