JEE PYQ: S Block Elements Question 5

Question 5 - 2021 (17 Mar Shift 2)

One of the by-products formed during the recovery of $\text{NH}_3$ from Solvay process is:

(a) $\text{Ca(OH)}_2$ (b) $\text{NaHCO}_3$ (c) $\text{CaCl}_2$ (d) $\text{NH}_4\text{Cl}$

Show Answer

Answer: (c)

Solution

In the Solvay process, $\text{NH}_4\text{Cl}$ is heated with $\text{Ca(OH)}_2$ to recover ammonia. $\text{CaCl}_2$ is formed as a by-product: $2\text{NH}_4\text{Cl} + \text{Ca(OH)}_2 \rightarrow \text{CaCl}_2 + 2\text{NH}_3 + 2\text{H}_2\text{O}$.
