JEE PYQ: Solutions And Colligative Properties Question 17

Question 17 - 2020 (04 Sep Shift 1)

At 300 K, the vapour pressure of a solution containing 1 mole of $n$-hexane and 3 moles of $n$-heptane is 550 mm of Hg. At the same temperature, if one more mole of $n$-heptane is added, the vapour pressure increases by 10 mm of Hg. The vapour pressure in mm Hg of $n$-heptane in its pure state is ____.

Show Answer

Answer: 600

Solution

From two equations: $2200 = P^0_{\text{hexane}} + 3P^0_{\text{heptane}}$ and $2800 = P^0_{\text{hexane}} + 4P^0_{\text{heptane}}$. $P^0_{\text{heptane}} = 600$ mm Hg.
