JEE PYQ: Solutions And Colligative Properties Question 26

Question 26 - 2019 (08 Apr Shift 1)

The vapour pressures of pure liquids A and B are 400 and 600 mmHg, respectively at 298 K. The mole fraction of liquid B is 0.5 in the mixture. The vapour pressure, mole fractions of A and B in vapour phase are:

(1). (450 mmHg, 0.4, 0.6)

(2). (500 mmHg, 0.5, 0.5)

(3). (450 mmHg, 0.5, 0.5)

(4). (500 mmHg, 0.4, 0.6)

Show Answer

Answer: (4)

Solution

$P = 0.5 \times 400 + 0.5 \times 600 = 500$ mmHg. $y_A = 200/500 = 0.4$, $y_B = 300/500 = 0.6$.
