JEE PYQ: Solutions And Colligative Properties Question 3

Question 3 - 2021 (17 Mar Shift 1)

The oxygen dissolved in water exerts a partial pressure of 20 kPa in the vapour above water. The molar solubility of oxygen in water is ____ $\times 10^{-5}$ mol dm$^{-3}$. (Round off to the Nearest Integer).

[Given: $K_H = 8.0 \times 10^4$ kPa for $\text{O}_2$; Density of water $= 1.0$ kg dm$^{-3}$]

Show Answer

Answer: 25

Solution

$x = P/K_H = 20/(8 \times 10^4) = 2.5 \times 10^{-4}$. Solubility $= 2.5 \times 10^{-4} \times 1000/18 = 25 \times 10^{-5}$ mol dm$^{-3}$.
