JEE PYQ: Solutions And Colligative Properties Question 40

Question 40 - 2019 (10 Jan Shift 1)

Liquids A and B form an ideal solution. At 350 K, $P_A^0 = 7 \times 10^3$ Pa, $P_B^0 = 12 \times 10^3$ Pa. The composition of vapour in equilibrium with a solution containing 40 mole percent of A is:

(1). ($x_A = 0.37$; $x_B = 0.63$)

(2). ($x_A = 0.28$; $x_B = 0.72$)

(3). ($x_A = 0.4$; $x_B = 0.6$)

(4). ($x_A = 0.76$; $x_B = 0.24$)

Show Answer

Answer: (2)

Solution

$P_{\text{total}} = 10^4$ Pa. $y_A = \frac{7000 \times 0.4}{10000} = 0.28$. $y_B = 0.72$.
