JEE PYQ: States Of Matter Question 17

Question 17 - 2019 (09 Apr Shift 2)

At a given temperature $T$, gases Ne, Ar, Xe and Kr deviate from ideal gas behaviour. Their equation of state is $P = \frac{RT}{V_m - b}$. Which gas will exhibit steepest increase in $Z$ vs $P$ plot?

(1) Xe (2) Kr (3) Ne (4) Ar

Show Answer

Answer: (1) Xe

Solution

$Z = 1 + \frac{Pb}{RT}$. Slope $= \frac{b}{RT}$. Higher $b$ gives steeper slope. Xe has the largest $b$ value.
