JEE PYQ: States Of Matter Question 18
Question 18 - 2019 (10 Apr Shift 1)
Consider van der Waals constants for gases A, B, C, D. The correct statement is:
(1) Gas C will occupy more volume than gas A; gas B will be more compressible than gas D
(2) Gas C will occupy lesser volume than gas A; gas B will be lesser compressible than gas D
(3) Gas C will occupy more volume than gas A; gas B will be lesser compressible than gas D
(4) Gas C will occupy lesser volume than gas A; gas B will be more compressible than gas D
Show Answer
Answer: (1)
Solution
For same $b$, larger $a$ means lesser volume (stronger attraction). $a$(A) > $a$(C) with same $b$, so C occupies more volume. For same $a$, smaller $b$ means more compressible. $b$(B) < $b$(D) with same $a$, so B is more compressible.
