JEE PYQ: Surface Chemistry Question 2

Question 2 - 2021 (17 Mar Shift 1)

Type: MCQ

With respect to drug-enzyme interaction, identify the wrong statement:

(a) Non-Competitive inhibitor binds to the allosteric site
(b) Allosteric inhibitor changes the enzyme’s active site
(c) Allosteric inhibitor competes with the enzyme’s active site
(d) Competitive inhibitor binds to the enzyme’s active site

Show Answer

Answer: (b)

Solution

Some drugs do not bind to the enzyme’s active site. These bind to a different site of enzyme which is called the allosteric site. This binding of inhibitor at the allosteric site changes the shape of the active site in such a way that substrate cannot recognise it. Such inhibitor is known as non-competitive inhibitor. Allosteric inhibitors do NOT compete with the enzyme’s active site.
