JEE PYQ: Thermodynamics Question 39

Question 39 - 2019 (12 Jan Shift 1)

The combination of plots which does not represent isothermal expansion of an ideal gas is:

(A) P vs $1/V_m$ — straight line through origin (B) P vs $V_m$ — hyperbola (C) $PV_m$ vs P — horizontal line (D) U vs $V_m$ — curve increasing

(1) (B) and (D)

(2) (A) and (C)

(3) (B) and (C)

(4) (A) and (D)

Show Answer

Answer: (1)

Solution

Isothermal expansion: $PV_m = K$ (graph C is correct). $P = \dfrac{K}{V_m}$ (graph A is correct, graph B should be a rectangular hyperbola - also correct). Therefore (B) and (D) are not correct representations.
