Question 7 - 2021 (18 Mar Shift 1)

Choose the correct statement about two circles whose equations are given below:

$x^2 + y^2 - 10x - 10y + 41 = 0$

$x^2 + y^2 - 22x - 10y + 137 = 0$

(1) circles have same centre

(2) circles have no meeting point

(3) circles have only one meeting point

(4) circles have two meeting points

Show Answer

Answer: (3)

Solution

$C_1(5,5), r_1 = 3$; $C_2(11,5), r_2 = 3$. $C_1C_2 = 6 = r_1 + r_2$. Circles touch each other externally, so only one meeting point.
