JEE PYQ: Limits Question 26

Question 26 - 2019 (10 Apr Shift 2)

If $\lim_{x \to 1} \frac{x^2 - ax + b}{x - 1} = 5$, then $a + b$ is equal to:

(1) $-4$

(2) $5$

(3) $-7$

(4) $1$

Show Answer

Answer: (3)

Solution

For limit to be finite, $1 - a + b = 0$. Then $\lim_{x\to 1}\frac{2x - a}{1} = 5 \Rightarrow 2 - a = 5 \Rightarrow a = -3$ and $b = -4$. So $a + b = -3 - 4 = -7$.
