JEE PYQ: Quadratic Equation Question 34

Question 34 - 2019 (08 Apr Shift 1)

The sum of the solutions of the equation $|\sqrt{x} - 2| + \sqrt{x}(\sqrt{x} - 4) + 2 = 0$, $(x > 0)$ is equal to:

(1) 9

(2) 12

(3) 4

(4) 10

Show Answer

Answer: (4)

Solution

Let $\sqrt{x} = a$

$|a - 2| + a(a - 4) + 2 = 0$

When $\sqrt{x} = 1 \Rightarrow x = 1$

When $\sqrt{x} = 3 \Rightarrow x = 9$

Hence, the required sum of solutions of the equation $= 10$
