JEE PYQ: Statistics Question 10

Question 10 - 2020 (03 Sep Shift 1)

For the frequency distribution:

Variate $(x)$: $x_1$, $x_2$, $x_3 \ldots x_{15}$

Frequency $(f)$: $f_1$, $f_2$, $f_3 \ldots f_{15}$

where $0 < x_1 < x_2 < x_3 < \ldots < x_{15} = 10$ and $\sum_{i=1}^{15} f_i > 0$, the standard deviation cannot be:

(1) 4 (2) 1 (3) 6 (4) 2

Show Answer

Answer: (3) 6

Solution

$\text{var}(x) \leq \left(\frac{b-a}{2}\right)^2 < 25$, so S.D. $< 5$. Cannot be 6.
