The number of solutions of the equation $1 + \sin^4 x = \cos^2 3x$, $x \in \left[-\frac{5\pi}{2}, \frac{5\pi}{2}\right]$ is:

Solution

L.H.S. $\ge 1$ and R.H.S. $\le 1 \Rightarrow$ both equal 1.

$\sin x = 0$ and $\cos^2 x = 1 \Rightarrow x = 0, \pm\pi, \pm 2\pi$

Total solutions $= 5$.
