JEE PYQ: Atomic Physics Question 18

Question 18 - 2021 (25 Feb Shift 2)

The wavelength of the photon emitted by a hydrogen atom when an electron makes a transition from $n = 2$ to $n = 1$ state is:

(1) 194.8 nm

(2) 490.7 nm

(3) 913.3 nm

(4) 121.8 nm

Show Answer

Answer: (4)

Solution

$\frac{1}{\lambda} = R\left(\frac{1}{1^2} - \frac{1}{2^2}\right) = \frac{3R}{4}$. $\Delta E = 10.2$ eV. $\lambda = \frac{12375}{10.2} \approx 121.8$ nm.
