JEE PYQ: Atomic Physics Question 6

Question 6 - 2021 (17 Mar Shift 1)

Which level of the single ionized carbon has the same energy as the ground state energy of hydrogen atom?

(1) 1

(2) 6

(3) 4

(4) 8

Show Answer

Answer: (2)

Solution

Energy of H-atom is $E = -13.6Z^2/n^2$. For H-atom $Z = 1$ and ground state $n = 1$, so $E = -13.6$ eV. For carbon atom (single ionised), $Z = 6$. $E = -13.6 \times Z^2/n^2 = -13.6$ (given). So $n^2 = 6^2$, $n = 6$.
