JEE PYQ: Capacitance Question 17

Question 17 - 2020 (05 Sep Shift 2)

In the circuit shown, charge on the 5 $\mu$F capacitor is:

(Circuit: 2 $\mu$F and 4 $\mu$F in parallel across the top, 5 $\mu$F in middle, connected between 6 V sources)

(1) 18.00 $\mu$C

(2) 10.90 $\mu$C

(3) 16.36 $\mu$C

(4) 5.45 $\mu$C

Show Answer

Answer: (1)

Solution

Let $q_1$ and $q_2$ be the charge on capacitors of 2$\mu$F and 4$\mu$F. Charge on capacitor of 5$\mu$F: $Q = q_1 + q_2$. $5V_0 = 2(6 - V_0) + 4(6 - V_0)$. $11V_0 = 36$, $V_0 = \frac{36}{11}$. $Q = 5V_0 = \frac{180}{11}\mu$C $\approx 16.36\mu$C. (Answer key says (1) but calculation gives 16.36.)
