JEE PYQ: Capacitance Question 19

Question 19 - 2020 (06 Sep Shift 1)

For the given input voltage waveform $V_{in}(t)$, the output voltage waveform $V_o(t)$, across the capacitor is correctly depicted by:

(Circuit: 1 k$\Omega$ resistor in series with 10 nF capacitor, input is 5V square pulse)

(1) Charging/discharging exponential curve

(2) Rounded peaks

(3) Triangular wave

(4) Sharp exponential charging

Show Answer

Answer: (1)

Solution

When first pulse is applied, the potential across capacitor: $V_0(t) = V_{in}\left(1 - e^{-\frac{t}{RC}}\right)$. At $t = 5\mu$s: $V_0 = 5(1 - e^{-0.5}) = 2$ V. When no pulse: discharging. $V_0(t) = 2e^{-t/RC} = 1.21$ V. The graph (a) correctly depicts this.
