JEE PYQ: Current Electricity Question 16

Question 16 - 2021 (26 Feb 2021 Shift 1)

Five equal resistances are connected in a network as shown in figure. The net resistance between the points $A$ and $B$ is:

(1) $\frac{3R}{2}$

(2) $\frac{R}{2}$

(3) $R$

(4) $2R$

Show Answer

Answer: (3)

Solution

It is a balanced Wheatstone bridge ($R_1 R_4 = R_2 R_3$). The fifth resistor between the balanced nodes carries no current. The equivalent is two pairs in series, then in parallel: $R_{\text{eq}} = \frac{2R \times 2R}{2R + 2R} = R$.
