JEE PYQ: Current Electricity Question 38

Question 38 - 2019 (08 Apr 2019 Shift 1)

For the circuit shown, with $R_1 = 1.0,\Omega$, $R_2 = 2.0,\Omega$, $E_1 = 2$ V and $E_2 = E_3 = 4$ V, the potential difference between the points ‘a’ and ‘b’ is approximately (in V):

(1) 2.7

(2) 2.3

(3) 3.7

(4) 3.3

Show Answer

Answer: (4)

Solution

$V_{AB} = V_{CB} = \frac{E_1/r_1 + E_2/r_2 + E_3/r_3}{1/r_1 + 1/r_2 + 1/r_3} = \frac{1+2+2}{1+1/2+1} \times \frac{2}{3} = \frac{2+4+4}{1+1+1} \cdot \frac{1}{3/2+1} = \frac{6}{3} \approx 2V$… Actually $= \frac{10}{3} \approx 3.3$ V.
