Solution
For a balanced bridge: $X = \frac{R(100-l)}{l}$. For observation (1): $X = \frac{1000 \times 40}{60} = \frac{2000}{3},\Omega$. For (2): $X = \frac{100 \times 87}{13} = \frac{8700}{13},\Omega$. For (3): $X = \frac{10 \times 98.5}{1.5} = \frac{1970}{3},\Omega$. For (4): $X = \frac{1 \times 99}{1} = 99,\Omega$. Observation (4) is inconsistent.
