JEE PYQ: Electrostatics Question 21

Question 21 - 2020 (04 Sep Shift 1)

Two charged thin infinite plane sheets of uniform surface charge density $\sigma_+$ and $\sigma_-$, where $|\sigma_+| > |\sigma_-|$, intersect at right angle. Which of the following best represents the electric field lines for this system?

(1) Field lines symmetric about both planes

(2) Field lines bend toward the negative sheet

(3) Field lines are more dense on the positive side

(4) Combination field pattern

Show Answer

Answer: (3)

Solution

The electric field due to each sheet is $\frac{\sigma}{2\varepsilon_0}$. Since $|\sigma_+| > |\sigma_-|$, the field along the positive sheet’s direction is stronger. The superposition of the two perpendicular fields gives the pattern in option (3).
