JEE PYQ: Electrostatics Question 48

Question 48 - 2019 (12 Apr Shift 1)

A point dipole $\vec{p} = -p_0\hat{x}$ is kept at the origin. The potential and electric field due to this dipole on the $y$-axis at a distance $d$ are, respectively: (Take $V = 0$ at infinity)

(1) $\frac{|\vec{p}|}{4\pi\varepsilon_0 d^2}, \frac{-\vec{p}}{4\pi\varepsilon_0 d^3}$

(2) $0, \frac{-\vec{p}}{4\pi\varepsilon_0 d^3}$

(3) $0, \frac{|\vec{p}|}{4\pi\varepsilon_0 d^3}$

(4) $\frac{|\vec{p}|}{4\pi\varepsilon_0 d^2}, \frac{-\vec{p}}{4\pi\varepsilon_0 d^3}$

Show Answer

Answer: (2)

Solution

On the equatorial line ($y$-axis is perpendicular to dipole axis $x$): $V = 0$ and $\vec{E} = \frac{-\vec{p}}{4\pi\varepsilon_0 d^3}$ (antiparallel to dipole moment).
