JEE PYQ: Experimental Physics Question 10

Question 10 - 2020 (04 Sep 2020 Shift 1)

A small bar magnet is moved through a coil at constant speed from one end to the other. Which of the following series of observations will be seen on the galvanometer $G$ attached across the coil? Three positions shown describe: (1) the magnet’s entry (2) magnet is completely inside and (3) magnet’s exit.

(1) Deflection right, no deflection, deflection right

(2) Deflection right, no deflection, deflection left

(3) Deflection right, deflection left, deflection right

(4) Deflection right, deflection right, deflection right

Show Answer

Answer: (2)

Solution

When bar magnet is entering, flux changes and e.m.f. is induced, so galvanometer deflects in positive direction. When magnet is completely inside, flux doesn’t change, so no deflection. When bar magnet exits, flux changes again and e.m.f. is induced in opposite direction, so galvanometer deflects in reverse direction.
