Question 35 - 2019 (09 Apr 2019 Shift 1)

A rigid square loop of side $a$ and carrying current $I_2$ is lying on a horizontal surface near a long current carrying wire in the same plane as shown in figure. The net force on the loop due to the wire will be:

(1) Repulsive and equal to $\frac{\mu_0 I_1 I_2}{2\pi}$

(2) Attractive and equal to $\frac{\mu_0 I_1 I_2}{3\pi}$

(3) Repulsive and equal to $\frac{\mu_0 I_1 I_2}{4\pi}$

(4) Zero

Answer: (3) Repulsive and equal to $\frac{\mu_0 I_1 I_2}{4\pi}$

Solution

$F = \frac{\mu_0 I_1 I_2}{2\pi}\left(\frac{1}{a} - \frac{1}{2a}\right) = \frac{\mu_0 I_1 I_2}{4\pi}$ (Repulsive).
