JEE PYQ: Magnetic Effects Of Current Question 40

Question 40 - 2019 (12 Apr 2019 Shift 2)

An electron, moving along the $x$-axis with an initial energy of $100$ eV, enters a region of magnetic field $\vec{B} = (1.5 \times 10^{-3}\text{ T})\hat{k}$ at $S$. The field extends between $x = 0$ and $x = 2$ cm. The electron is detected at the point $Q$ on a screen placed $8$ cm away from the point $S$. The distance $d$ between $P$ and $Q$ (on the screen) is:

(1) $11.65$ cm

(2) $12.87$ cm

(3) $1.22$ cm

(4) $2.25$ cm

Show Answer

Answer: (2) $12.87$ cm

Solution

The electron follows a circular arc in the magnetic field region and then travels straight to the screen, giving $d \approx 12.87$ cm.
