JEE PYQ: Semiconductors Question 12

Question 12 - 2021 (25 Feb 2021 Shift 2)

For extrinsic semiconductors: when doping level is increased:

(1) Fermi-level of p and n-type semiconductors will not be affected

(2) Fermi-level of p-type will go downward and n-type will go upward

(3) Fermi-level of both will go upward for $T > T_F$ K and downward for $T < T_F$ K

(4) Fermi-level of p-type will go upward and n-type will go downward

Show Answer

Answer: (2)

Solution

In n-type, pentavalent impurity donates electrons — Fermi level goes up. In p-type, trivalent impurity creates holes — Fermi level goes down.
