JEE PYQ: Semiconductors Question 38

Question 38 - 2019 (12 Apr 2019 Shift 2)

Figure shows a DC voltage regulator circuit, with Zener diode breakdown voltage $= 6$ V. If unregulated input varies between 10 V to 16 V, the maximum Zener current is:

(1) 2.5 mA

(2) 1.5 mA

(3) 7.5 mA

(4) 3.5 mA

Show Answer

Answer: (4)

Solution

$I_L = 6/(4 \times 10^3) = 1.5$ mA. For $V = 16$ V: $I_S = (16-6)/(2 \times 10^3) = 5$ mA. $I_Z = 5 - 1.5 = 3.5$ mA.
