JEE PYQ: Thermodynamics Question 5

Question 5 - 2021 (18 Mar Shift 2)

For an adiabatic expansion of an ideal gas, the fractional change in its pressure is equal to (where $\gamma$ is the ratio of specific heats):

(1) $-\gamma \frac{dV}{V}$

(2) $-\gamma \frac{V}{dV}$

(3) $-\frac{1}{\gamma}\frac{dV}{V}$

(4) $\frac{dV}{V}$

Show Answer

Answer: (1)

Solution

$PV^{\gamma} =$ constant

Differentiating: $\frac{dP}{dV} = -\frac{\gamma P}{V}$

$\frac{dP}{P} = -\frac{\gamma dV}{V}$
