JEE PYQ: Units And Dimensions Question 7

Question 7 - 2020 (02 Sep Shift 2)

If momentum (P), area (A) and time (T) are taken to be the fundamental quantities then the dimensional formula for energy is:

(1) $[P^2 A T^{-2}]$

(2) $[P A^{-1} T^{-2}]$

(3) $[P A^{1/2} T^{-1}]$

(4) $[P^{1/2} A T^{-1}]$

Show Answer

Answer: (3)

Solution

Energy $E \propto A^a T^b P^c$. Comparing dimensions: $c = 1, a = 1/2, b = -1$. Therefore $E = A^{1/2} T^{-1} P^1$.
