Chapter 09 Gravitation Questions-05

Questions

1. You find your mass to be $42 kg$ on a weighing machine. Is your mass more or less than $42 kg$ ?

Show Answer

Answer

On a weighing machine mass is measured by comparing the weights. So when you weigh your body an upward force (buoyant force) acts on it which causes machine to show your weight less than the actual weight.

2. You have a bag of cotton and an iron bar, each indicating a mass of $100 kg$ when measured on a weighing machine. In reality, one is heavier than other. Can you say which one is heavier and why?

Show Answer

Answer

Actual weight of any object is equal to the sum of its measured weight and the buoyant force. The bag of cotton is heavier since it is larger than iron bar, so the buoyant force is larger in case of cotton henceactual weight of cotton bag is more and it is heavier.
